New podcast explores a decade of dance and its legacy

30 June 2026

New podcast Rural Moves looks at the success of the Rural Touring Dance Initiative (RTDI) which saw dance brought to communities across the nation.

RTDI was launched in 2015 to address the absence of dance in rural spaces.

It went on to deliver a decade of enriching dance experiences in unexpected locations the length and breadth of the UK, proving itself a viable and sustainable touring model in a challenging climate for small-scale touring.

Now the Rural Moves podcast has been created which delves deeper into this remarkable success story.

Rural Moves features interviews with key people involved over the last decade.

Developed and produced by RTDI’s Beccy Lloyd, the series has six podcasts.

As well as telling the story of RDTI they will also work as learning tools for emerging artists.

Rural Moves is a lasting legacy for the decade dance came to the countryside, moved minds and became a model for sustainable touring.

RDTI – life, legacy and look to the future…

Since 2015 the Rural Touring Dance Initiative has been facilitating extraordinary encounters between dance artists and rural audiences.

During a decade in which our relationship with live performance has been challenged by a pandemic, and the rise of the online attention economy, RTDI has resolutely championed the joy of intimate connections in community spaces around the UK.

In six 36-minute episodes, four hosts and their guests explore the legacy of RTDI, celebrate the people who made it happen, and look to the future.

Artists, choreographers, producers, promoters, project staff and partners reflect on their experiences over the last ten years.

Enjoy unique insights into this distinctly different approach to touring and what we can learn from RTDI’s 421 rural shows performed by 55 companies to more than 20000 audience members at over 400 venues across the UK.

Students, artists, producers, promoters, venues and audiences anywhere will find something to inspire in this joyful journey through a decade of dance.
