A celebration of the stars of rural touring for International Women’s Day

6 March 2026

As part of International Women’s Day 2026 we asked you to send in stories of women who are the stars of rural touring.

We are delighted to feature some of those culture champions here. From those at the heartbeat of schemes to volunteer promoters who tirelessly champion culture at the centre of rural communities.

You responded with stories about inspirational women in our sector bringing rural touring to life…

‘Yvonne remains as passionate about rural touring from the first day I met her…”

Kerry Bartlett from Artsreach raves about a woman who has been part of the rural touring sector for more than a quarter of a century – Yvonne Gallimore (pictured above in orange).

Kerry said: “I’d champion Yvonne as a woman in rural touring that has inspires me. Yvonne has been part of the Artsreach team for over 25 years and remains as passionate now about Artsreach and the rural touring model as the very first day I met her.

“Yvonne strongly advocates for the impact we can have on individuals and, above anything, striving to keep our volunteers and our audiences at the heart of what we do.

“Alongside having a keen eye for seeking out those magical, memorable and unique productions and artists that will challenges and inspire our audiences, Yvonne has been dedicated to developing creative participatory opportunities that use arts and culture to bring people together, break down barriers and reach out to those most in need within our communities.

“Yvonne’s ‘can do’ attitude and loyalty to our mission is inspiring to be around.. Our volunteers will testify to her calm approach supportive nature and unwavering passion for rural touring. I am proud to have learnt so much someone who denies any depth of knowledge at all!”

“Dawn drives rural touring forward…”

The team at Applause got in touch to champion a figure at the heart of rural touring – Dawn Badland.

“We’re proud to recognise our founder and Executive Director Dawn Badland. Dawn started Applause Rural Touring over 25-years-ago and her determination and passion for the sector continues to inspire us. Dawn recognises opportunities to collaborate and drive rural touring forward with a constant eye on strengthening it for the future.”

“Gwyneth and Gaynor’s passion and creativity…”

Nia Coyle and Lara Herde from Night Out Wales say they are inspired by two promoters who have championed rural touring for years.

They wrote: “I would say our two lovely women promoters, Gwyneth Kensler and Gaynor Morgan Rees (pictured above) who run a small theatre in Denbigh called Theatr Twm o’r Nant.

“They have been promoting events for years on the Night Out scheme both in English and Welsh language. Gaynor is also a famous Welsh actress and is still working on productions. They still have the passion and creativity to keep going. Both are definitely inspiring.”
